Book of John - Chapter 21 - Verse 15

21:15
So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.

Meaning

After Jesus and his disciples had dined, Jesus turned to Simon Peter and asked him if he loved him more than the others. This question was significant because Peter had previously denied Jesus three times before his crucifixion. By asking Peter this question three times, Jesus was symbolically giving Peter the opportunity to affirm his love and commitment to him. Each time Peter responded that he loved Jesus, and each time Jesus instructed him to "feed my lambs" or take care of his followers. This exchange between Jesus and Peter is a powerful demonstration of forgiveness, restoration, and the importance of love in serving others. It serves as a reminder to all believers of the need to show love and care for one another, especially those who are vulnerable or in need of guidance.

Theological Overview

There is a rich theological interpretation in this conversation between Jesus and Simon Peter recorded in John 21:15. The significance of Jesus asking Peter three times if he loves Him corresponds to Peter's three denials of Jesus before His crucifixion. Through this exchange, Jesus not only forgives Peter but also reinstates him as a leader in His ministry. The use of the word "agape" for love in Jesus' first two questions and "phileo" in Peter's responses adds depth to the dialogue. Jesus challenges Peter to love Him unconditionally, with the self-sacrificial love of agape, but Peter responds with the love of friendship, phileo. Jesus then meets Peter where he is, accepting his love in any form and commissioning him to care for His followers. This interaction demonstrates Jesus' grace and willingness to work with His disciples in their weaknesses, reminding us of His unconditional love and forgiveness for all who seek to serve Him.

American Standard Version

So when they had broken their fast, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, [son] of John, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
