Book of John - Chapter 2 - Verse 10

2:10
And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

Meaning

Jesus performed his first miracle at a wedding feast in Cana, turning water into wine. In this verse, the master of the feast acknowledges to the bridegroom that typically, people serve the good wine first and then switch to the inferior quality once the guests have had their fill. However, in this case, the master of the feast is impressed that the best wine was kept until the end. This signifies the miraculous nature of Jesus' act, as he not only provided wine but did so in abundance and of the highest quality. The verse showcases Jesus as a provider of good things, and it foreshadows the spiritual significance of his ministry, where he would offer salvation and refreshment for all who believe in him. The verse also highlights the idea of divine timing, as it was at the perfect moment that Jesus revealed his power, signifying that he brings about blessings in his own time and in ways that exceed human expectations.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse from the Gospel of John is that it represents the theme of abundance and the overflowing grace of God. In this passage, Jesus turns water into wine at a wedding in Cana, providing the best wine when the guests least expected it. This act of providing an abundance of good wine symbolizes the grace and love of God that surpasses human understanding. It can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, where he provides salvation and eternal life to all who believe. The word study of "good wine" in this context can also reveal the significance of Jesus being the ultimate source of joy and fulfillment in our lives. By keeping the best wine until last, Jesus demonstrates that his miracles and blessings are always worth the wait and far superior to anything the world can offer.
