Book of John - Chapter 19 - Verse 15

19:15
But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

Meaning

When Jesus stood before Pontius Pilate, the crowd demanded his crucifixion, shouting "Away with him, away with him, crucify him." Pilate questioned the crowd, asking if he should crucify their King, to which the chief priests responded, "We have no king but Caesar." This moment captures the tension between religious authority and political power during the time of Jesus' trial. The chief priests, who were supposed to lead the people in matters of faith, instead chose to align themselves with the oppressive Roman Empire and deny Jesus as their rightful King. By rejecting Jesus in favor of Caesar, they symbolically turned their backs on the promised Messiah and betrayed their own heritage as the chosen people of God. This verse serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of compromising one's beliefs for the sake of worldly power.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse is the theme of rejection and betrayal. Jesus, the King of the Jews, was rejected by his own people who called for his crucifixion. The chief priests, who were supposed to be the spiritual leaders of the Jewish people, declared that they did not have a king but Caesar, choosing political power over their faith. This betrayal and rejection of Jesus can be seen as a fulfillment of the prophecies concerning the suffering servant in the Old Testament, particularly in Isaiah 53, where it was foretold that the Messiah would be despised and rejected by men. This verse also highlights the tension between earthly power and spiritual authority, as Pilate, a representative of secular authority, questioned the Jewish leaders about crucifying their King. It serves as a reminder of the dangers of prioritizing worldly power over divine truth.

American Standard Version
