Book of John - Chapter 18 - Verse 37

18:37
Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

Meaning

When Pilate asked Jesus if he was a king, Jesus responded by affirming his kingship, but not in the way that Pilate or anyone else at that time would have expected. Jesus explained that his kingdom was not of this world, as it is often interpreted in a spiritual rather than a worldly sense. Jesus emphasized that his purpose on earth was to bear witness to the truth and those who truly follow him are those who are of the truth and hear his voice. This verse highlights Jesus' mission to bring the message of truth to humanity, emphasizing the importance of seeking and following the truth. By acknowledging his role as a king in the spiritual realm, Jesus reveals his divine nature and the significance of his ultimate purpose in coming into the world.

One important theological interpretation of this verse is the emphasis on Jesus's kingship and the truth. When Pilate questions Jesus about being a king, Jesus affirms His kingship but clarifies that His kingdom is not of this world. This distinction highlights the divine nature of His rule, rooted in truth and not worldly power. Jesus further explains that He came into the world to bear witness to the truth, indicating His role as the ultimate source of truth and wisdom.
