Book of John - Chapter 17 - Verse 12

17:12
While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.

Meaning

In this verse, Jesus is speaking to God, acknowledging that He had kept His disciples in God's name while He was in the world. He mentions that He had kept all the disciples that God had given Him, except for the "son of perdition," referring to Judas Iscariot who would betray Him. This betrayal was foretold in scripture, fulfilling a prophecy. Jesus highlights the importance of keeping His disciples safe and secure in God's name, showing His faithfulness and dedication to his followers. By referencing the fulfillment of scripture, Jesus demonstrates His role as the fulfiller of prophecy and the significance of His actions in the grand plan of God. This verse serves as a reminder of the loyalty and protection Jesus provides to those who belong to Him, while also foreshadowing the events leading up to His crucifixion and resurrection.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse focuses on Jesus' role as the protector of his disciples. By keeping them in the Father's name, Jesus ensures their safety and security while he is with them on Earth. The mention of the "son of perdition" refers to Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would betray Jesus. This highlights the idea that even among those chosen by God, there can still be individuals who turn away from Him. The fulfillment of scripture mentioned in this verse may point to the Old Testament prophecies about a betrayal that would occur, possibly referencing Psalm 41:9 which reads "Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me." This verse underscores the sovereignty of God in guiding the events of Jesus' betrayal and crucifixion, ultimately leading to the fulfillment of His plan of redemption for humanity.

American Standard Version

While I was with them, I kept them in thy name which thou hast given me: and I guarded them, and not one of them perished, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
