Book of John - Chapter 13 - Verse 19

13:19
Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe that I am he.

Meaning

In this verse, Jesus is speaking to his disciples, foretelling them of future events so that when they come to pass, they will believe in his divinity. By predicting these events before they happen, Jesus is demonstrating his omniscience and confirming his status as the Son of God. This verse highlights the importance of faith and belief in the Christian community, as Jesus presents these prophecies as evidence of his identity and authority. By sharing these insights with his followers, Jesus prepares them for what is to come and strengthens their trust in him. Through this act of foretelling, Jesus establishes a foundation of faith that will be essential for his disciples as they continue to spread his teachings to others. Ultimately, this verse serves to reinforce the disciples' belief in Jesus as the Messiah and encourages them to trust in his guidance and leadership.

Theological Overview

In this verse, Jesus is speaking to his disciples, foretelling future events to strengthen their faith. The phrase "that I am he" is a reference to the Old Testament concept of God's self-identification as "I AM" (Exodus 3:14). By declaring himself as "I am he," Jesus is affirming his divinity and connecting himself to the God of the Hebrew Scriptures. The theological interpretation of this verse underscores Jesus' role as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and the embodiment of God's promises. The word "believe" in this context points to the disciples' need to trust in Jesus' words and teachings, even when they may not fully understand the events unfolding before them. Through this verse, believers are encouraged to have faith in Jesus as the Messiah and Savior, who has the power to bring about the fulfillment of God's plans and promises.
