12:50
And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.

Meaning

In this verse, Jesus affirms that he knows that his Father's commandment leads to eternal life. This highlights the importance of obedience to God's will as the path to everlasting life and salvation. By following and speaking the words of the Father, Jesus is setting an example for his disciples and all believers to do the same. The verse emphasizes the unity between Jesus and the Father, showing that what Jesus speaks is in alignment with the Father's teachings. It serves as a reminder that the words of Jesus are not his own, but are from God himself. As believers read and reflect on this verse, they are encouraged to follow Jesus' example by speaking the truth of God's commandments and spreading the message of eternal life. This verse reinforces the belief that eternal life is found in following God's will and obeying His commandments as exemplified by Jesus.

Theological Overview

In this verse, Jesus affirms the eternal nature of his teachings and their source. By stating that he knows His Father's commandment is life everlasting, Jesus emphasizes the divine origin and timeless significance of his words. This theological interpretation highlights the foundational belief in Christianity that Jesus' teachings are not merely earthly advice but carry eternal implications for believers. Additionally, the verse underscores the unity between Jesus and God the Father, as Jesus speaks only what the Father has commanded him. This unity reinforces the concept of the Trinity in Christian theology, where Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are understood to be one God. The word "commandment" in this passage, when examined in its original Greek, can also be translated as "word" or "doctrine," further emphasizing the importance and authority of Jesus' teachings. By connecting his words directly to the Father's instruction, Jesus demonstrates the continuity and divine authority of his message.
