Book of John - Chapter 1 - Verse 39

1:39
He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

Meaning

In this verse, when Jesus invites the two disciples to "come and see," he is not just referring to a physical location where he dwells, but he is inviting them to experience a deeper personal encounter with him. By accepting this invitation and spending time with Jesus, the disciples were able to witness firsthand who he really was and develop a personal relationship with him. The mention of it being about the tenth hour signifies that it was late in the day, and yet the disciples chose to stay and abide with Jesus, indicating the significance of the experience they were having with him.

This verse encourages readers to be open to encountering Jesus personally, to come closer to him, and to spend time in his presence. Through spending time with Jesus and experiencing who he is, one can truly understand the depth of his teachings, his love, and his power. Just as the two disciples chose to abide with Jesus that day, we too are called to spend time with him, to dwell in his presence, and to develop a meaningful relationship with him. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of personal experience and connection with Jesus in understanding and growing in our faith.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of the verse at hand is the invitation from Jesus to "come and see." This invitation extends beyond just physically going to see where Jesus dwelt, but rather is an invitation to come and experience Him intimately. By abiding with Jesus for a day, the disciples were able to witness His way of life and experience His presence firsthand. The phrase "for it was about the tenth hour" holds significance as well, as it indicates that the disciples spent the day with Jesus until the evening hours. This demonstrates the disciples' commitment to learn from and be in the presence of Jesus for an extended period of time. Through this verse, we can see Jesus' willingness to reveal Himself to those who seek Him, inviting them to come closer and experience His life firsthand.
