Meaning

This verse from the book of John depicts an encounter between Jesus and two of his disciples who were following him. When Jesus noticed them following him, he stopped and asked them, "What seek ye?" This question is significant as it highlights the importance of seeking Jesus and his teachings. The disciples then refer to Jesus as "Rabbi," which means "Master," showing their respect and recognition of his authority. Their next question, "where dwellest thou?" reveals their desire to be closer to Jesus and learn from him in a more intimate setting. This interaction serves as a reminder for believers to constantly seek Jesus and to yearn for a deeper relationship with him. By asking this question, the disciples show their eagerness to learn from Jesus and be in his presence, setting an example for all Christians to follow in their pursuit of a closer relationship with the Lord.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological interpretation of the verse "Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?" it is important to consider the significance of Jesus asking the disciples what they were seeking. This question serves as an invitation for the disciples to reflect on their own intentions and desires in following Him. By addressing Jesus as "Rabbi," the disciples acknowledge Him as their teacher and seek to understand where He resides, indicating a desire for a deeper relationship and knowledge of Him. The word "Rabbi" translates to "Master," highlighting Jesus' authority and wisdom as the one who guides and instructs His followers. Through this exchange, Jesus establishes a personal connection with the disciples and invites them to come and see where He dwells, symbolizing an invitation to experience His presence and teachings firsthand.
