Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 8 - Verse 13

8:13
I will surely consume them, saith the LORD: there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.

Meaning

In this verse, the LORD is expressing His judgment upon the people for their disobedience and unfaithfulness. By stating that He will "surely consume them," the LORD is emphasizing the severity of His punishment. The imagery of the vine having no grapes, the fig tree having no figs, and the fading leaves symbolize the complete destruction and lack of abundance that will befall the people. The things that the LORD has given them will pass away from them, indicating that all the blessings and provisions they once enjoyed will be taken away as a consequence of their actions.

This verse serves as a warning to the people that disobedience and turning away from the LORD will result in loss and devastation. It highlights the importance of remaining faithful and obedient to God in order to experience His blessings and favor. It also serves as a reminder of the consequences of straying from the path set by the LORD. Ultimately, this verse conveys the message that disobedience will lead to destruction, but repentance and faithfulness can lead to restoration and blessings from the LORD.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of Jeremiah, God is using the imagery of a barren vineyard to convey a message of judgment to the people of Israel. The theological interpretation of this verse reveals God's displeasure with the people's disobedience and warns of the consequences of their actions. By stating that there will be no grapes on the vine, no figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade, God is symbolically showing how He will strip away the blessings He has bestowed upon them due to their unfaithfulness. The phrase "the things that I have given them shall pass away from them" highlights the idea that all good things come from God, and when His favor is removed, there will be nothing left for the people to sustain themselves. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of remaining faithful and obedient to God's commands.

American Standard Version
