Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of Jeremiah, the prophet speaks on behalf of the LORD of hosts, declaring the oppression and captivity of both the children of Israel and the children of Judah. The phrase "oppressed together" emphasizes the unity of these two groups in their suffering. The word "oppressed" in Hebrew can also be translated as "crushed," indicating the severity of their situation. The strong language used in this verse conveys the idea that not only were the Israelites and Judahites mistreated, but they were held captive tightly and refused any release from their captors. This refusal to let them go suggests the hardened hearts of those responsible for the oppression, highlighting the depth of the injustice faced by God's chosen people. Through theological interpretation, we can see a reflection of the Lord's compassion for the oppressed and his judgment against those who participate in such actions.
