49:27
And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Benhadad.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Amos in the Bible is a prophecy foretelling the destruction of Damascus, the capital of Syria, and specifically the palaces of its ruler, Benhadad. The image of a fire kindled in the wall of Damascus symbolizes a devastating judgment that will come upon the city and its inhabitants. In biblical prophecy, fires are often seen as a symbol of God's wrath and judgment. The mention of consuming the palaces of Benhadad indicates that even the powerful and wealthy will not be spared from the destruction. This verse serves as a warning to the people of Damascus, urging them to repent and turn back to God before it is too late. It is a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the sovereignty of God in carrying out His divine will.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of Amos, God is issuing a prophetic warning to the city of Damascus, the capital of Syria. The phrase "kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus" is a metaphorical way of describing God's judgment upon the city. Fire is often used in the Bible as a symbol of God's wrath and judgment. By saying that the fire will consume the palaces of Benhadad, the ruler of Damascus, God is indicating that even the most powerful and well-protected structures in the city will not be able to withstand His judgment. The name Benhadad means "son of Hadad," a reference to a Syrian deity, which suggests that the rulers of Damascus were relying on their false gods for protection instead of turning to the one true God. This verse serves as a reminder that no matter how strong or secure we may think we are, ultimately we are all subject to the judgment of God.

American Standard Version
