Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 44 - Verse 14

44:14
So that none of the remnant of Judah, which are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall escape or remain, that they should return into the land of Judah, to the which they have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return but such as shall escape.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Jeremiah is a prophecy about the remnant of Judah who had fled to Egypt to escape the impending destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. It emphasizes that only those who are chosen to escape will be able to return to the land of Judah. The remnant in Egypt had a desire to return to their homeland, but only those who are ordained by God will be able to do so. The verse suggests that not all who went to Egypt will survive and return to Judah, but only those who are able to escape from the trials and tribulations they face in Egypt. This prophecy serves as a reminder that God has a plan for his people, and those who trust in Him will ultimately be delivered and restored to their rightful place in the land of Judah.

The word study in this verse brings attention to the concept of 'escape', which signifies a narrow path to salvation and deliverance. The desire to return to their land is a longing for restoration and reconciliation with God, indicating that true repentance is necessary for reconciliation. Overall, this verse serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of turning away from God and the importance of seeking His mercy and forgiveness.
