Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 38 - Verse 4

38:4
Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Jeremiah, we see the princes advising the king to put a man to death because they believe that he is causing harm to the people of the city. The princes argue that this individual is weakening the morale and resolve of the men of war and the general population by speaking words that are seen as harmful and detrimental to their well-being. They accuse him of seeking to cause harm rather than promoting the welfare of the people. This verse highlights the importance of unity and loyalty during times of conflict and uncertainty. It also serves as a reminder of the consequences of words and actions that can undermine the strength and unity of a community. This passage can be used as a lesson on the importance of leadership, trust, and the impact of one's words on the well-being of others.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the princes are speaking to the king, urging him to put a man to death for allegedly weakening the resolve of the people and the men of war in the city. The theological interpretation of this passage can be seen in the way the leaders of the city are quick to seek the death of someone who they believe is not aligned with the interests of the people. The underlying message here is about the importance of loyalty and allegiance to the community, as well as the consequences of failing to do so. It also touches on the power dynamics within a society, where those in authority might feel threatened by dissenting voices and take extreme measures to maintain control. This verse serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of speaking out against the established order and the potential repercussions one might face.

American Standard Version

Then the princes said unto the king, Let this man, we pray thee, be put to death; forasmuch as he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.
