Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 38 - Verse 2

38:2
Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.

Meaning

This verse, taken from the book of Jeremiah in the Old Testament, conveys a message of warning and guidance from the Lord to the people of the city. The prophet Jeremiah delivers a solemn message that those who remain in the city will face death by the sword, famine, and pestilence. These afflictions are seen as punishment for their disobedience and sin. However, there is a glimmer of hope in the verse as well. The Lord offers a way of escape for those who are willing to leave the city and surrender to the Chaldeans. By doing so, they have the opportunity to spare their lives and be kept safe amidst the destruction and chaos. This message serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the importance of obeying the word of the Lord for protection and salvation.

Theological Overview

Here, in this verse from the book of Jeremiah, the LORD delivers a powerful message to the people of Jerusalem. The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes the consequences of disobedience and the importance of following God's commandments. The LORD warns that those who remain in the city will face death by the sword, famine, and pestilence, symbolizing the destruction and suffering that will come to those who refuse to heed His warning. On the other hand, those who choose to leave and go forth to the Chaldeans will be spared and allowed to live. This shows a message of redemption and salvation for those who choose to trust in God and follow His guidance. Additionally, a word study of this verse reveals that the word "Chaldeans" refers to the Babylonians, who were used by God as a tool of judgment against the people of Jerusalem. This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience and the importance of faith and obedience in God's plan.
