Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 34 - Verse 17

34:17
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.

Meaning

In this verse from the Book of Jeremiah, the LORD is chastising the people of Israel for not obeying His command to proclaim liberty to one another. The term "proclaiming liberty" refers to the concept of freeing slaves and treating each other with respect and fairness. Instead, the people have ignored God's instructions, leading to a declaration of a different kind of liberty - one that involves the sword, pestilence, and famine. This is a warning from the LORD that disobedience will result in severe consequences, including being scattered among different kingdoms on earth. The verse serves as a reminder of the importance of following God's teachings and treating others with kindness and compassion.

Theological Overview

Through a theological interpretation of this verse, we see the Lord expressing disappointment in His people for not following His command to proclaim liberty to one another. The freedom that was not upheld was not just physical, but also spiritual in nature. In this context, the word "liberty" carries a deeper meaning, signifying the release from sin and bondage. The consequences of this disobedience are outlined by the Lord, who declares a different kind of liberty - one that leads to the sword, pestilence, and famine. This serves as a reminder that true freedom is found in obedience to God's commands, and failing to do so can result in spiritual and physical suffering. The mention of being removed into all the kingdoms of the earth reinforces the severity of the judgment that will come upon those who do not heed the Lord's instructions.

American Standard Version

Therefore thus saith Jehovah: ye have not hearkened unto me, to proclaim liberty, every man to his brother, and every man to his neighbor: behold, I proclaim unto you a liberty, saith Jehovah, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth.
