Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 31 - Verse 28

31:28
And it shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the LORD.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Jeremiah illustrates the concept of God's ultimate power and authority over His people. In the first part of the verse, God mentions how He has the power to uproot, tear down, destroy, and afflict. This signifies God's ability to bring judgment and punishment upon those who have strayed from His path. However, the latter part of the verse reveals God's promise to watch over His people in order to build and plant. This represents God's mercy and grace, showing that He not only has the power to bring destruction but also the compassion to rebuild and restore. This verse serves as a reminder that God's love and care for His people are unwavering, regardless of their shortcomings. It emphasizes the balance between God's justice and His mercy, offering hope and redemption to those who seek it.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the prophet Jeremiah illustrates the overarching theme of God's control and sovereignty over His people. The phrase "watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict" portrays God's judgment and discipline upon the Israelites for their disobedience and idolatry. However, the verse also reveals God's mercy and faithfulness as He declares, "so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant." This dual nature of God's actions highlights His ability to both punish and restore His people according to His divine plan. The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes God's ultimate authority and righteousness in dealing with His chosen ones, demonstrating His power to bring forth both judgment and redemption in order to fulfill His purposes. Through the word studies of "build" and "plant," we see the promise of restoration and growth that God offers to His people after the season of discipline and pruning.

American Standard Version
