Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 23 - Verse 36

23:36
And the burden of the LORD shall ye mention no more: for every man's word shall be his burden; for ye have perverted the words of the living God, of the LORD of hosts our God.

Meaning

This verse from the Book of Jeremiah is a stern warning to the people of Israel. The burden of the Lord refers to the punishments that God has brought upon them for their continual disobedience and sin. The prophet Jeremiah is telling the people not to mention the burden of the Lord anymore because every man's word will be his burden. In other words, they will be held accountable for their own actions and words. The verse points out that the people have perverted the words of the living God, twisting them to fit their own agendas and desires. Instead of following God's commandments, they have strayed from the path of righteousness. The mention of the Lord of hosts, who is described as their God, emphasizes God's authority and power over them. Ultimately, this verse serves as a reminder to the people of Israel to repent and turn back to God before it is too late.
