Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 2 - Verse 34

2:34
Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.

Meaning

Jeremiah 2:34 condemns the people of Israel for shedding the blood of innocent souls in their pursuit of idolatry and sin. The mention of blood in their skirts symbolizes the guilt and responsibility they bear for the unjust deaths of the poor and innocent. The verse emphasizes that this bloodshed was not hidden or unnoticed; rather, it was evident to all. This serves as a powerful reminder that God sees and knows all of our actions, especially those that harm the vulnerable and innocent. The verse serves as a warning against the consequences of turning away from God's laws and engaging in actions that lead to the suffering of others. It calls for repentance and a return to righteousness in order to avoid the judgment and punishment that inevitably follows injustice and bloodshed.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse conveys a powerful message about the consequences of injustice and the shedding of innocent blood. In this context, "skirts" symbolize the idea of being tainted or stained with guilt, implying that the blood of the innocent has been shed by those who are corrupt or wicked. This verse serves as a reminder that God sees and knows everything, and that there will be a day of reckoning for those who perpetrate evil against the vulnerable and innocent. The language used in this verse emphasizes the seriousness of the wrongdoing, stating that the blood of the poor innocents is not hidden or concealed, but is evident for all to see. This highlights the idea that God's justice will ultimately prevail, and that those who commit acts of cruelty and injustice will be held accountable for their actions.
