Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 2 - Verse 10

2:10
For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.

Meaning

Within this verse, the prophet calls for a reflection on the contrast between the luxurious, prosperous isles of Chittim and the humble, nomadic lifestyle of the Kedarites. The isles of Chittim represent wealth, opulence, and comfort, while Kedar symbolizes simplicity, hardship, and resilience. By instructing the audience to "pass over the isles of Chittim" and "send unto Kedar," the prophet urges a comparison between these two contrasting ways of life. Through this comparison, the audience is encouraged to reflect on the diversity of human experiences and the importance of recognizing and understanding the differences that exist among various cultures and societies. The call to "consider diligently" emphasizes the need for thorough observation and contemplation in order to grasp the significance of these differences. By prompting the audience to investigate these contrasting realities, the verse encourages a deeper appreciation for the complexities of the human experience and the importance of empathy and understanding in building a more connected and compassionate world.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the mention of the isles of Chittim and Kedar serves as a call to the reader to reflect on the diversity and extent of God's creation. The isles of Chittim were known in ancient times to be the western islands, possibly referring to the Mediterranean islands or even beyond. Kedar, on the other hand, was located in the deserts of Arabia, representing the eastern part of the known world. By instructing the reader to pass over these distant lands and consider diligently, the verse prompts us to contemplate the vastness and diversity of God's creation. It encourages us to seek out the wonders of the world and see the hand of God in all things. The language used here is symbolic, emphasizing the importance of reflection and observation in recognizing the power and majesty of God in every corner of the earth.
