Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 17 - Verse 11

17:11
As the partridge sitteth on eggs, and hatcheth them not; so he that getteth riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.

Meaning

The verse you are referring to comes from the Book of Jeremiah in the Old Testament. In this passage, the comparison is drawn between a partridge sitting on eggs that are not her own and someone who acquires wealth through deceitful or unethical means. Just as the partridge will not successfully hatch eggs that do not belong to her, the individual who gains riches unjustly will ultimately not be able to enjoy them. The imagery of the verse highlights the consequences of ill-gotten gains, suggesting that wealth obtained through dishonesty will not last. The partridge's eggs will be left unattended and the riches acquired through deceit will be lost in the middle of one's life, ultimately leading to foolishness and misfortune in the end. This verse serves as a cautionary reminder about the importance of integrity and honesty in all aspects of life, including the pursuit of wealth and success.

Theological Overview

One interpretation of this verse suggests that the comparison between the partridge and the person who acquires wealth dishonestly highlights the theme of folly and ultimately, its consequences. In the analogy, the partridge sits on eggs she did not lay and does not benefit from the hatching, much like the person who gains riches through deceitful means. The imagery of leaving the acquired wealth in the midst of one's days implies a premature cutting off of the ill-gotten gains, leaving the individual without the anticipated benefits. The final outcome, being a fool in the end, serves as a warning against the pursuit of wealth through dishonesty. This cautionary tale reinforces the biblical principle of righteousness and moral integrity in all aspects of life, including one's financial dealings. It prompts individuals to seek wealth through honorable means and to avoid the temptation of deceitful practices which, ultimately, lead to ruin.

American Standard Version

As the partridge that sitteth on [eggs] which she hath not laid, so is he that getteth riches, and not by right; in the midst of his days they shall leave him, and at his end he shall be a fool.
