Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 12 - Verse 2

12:2
Thou hast planted them, yea, they have taken root: they grow, yea, they bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth, and far from their reins.

Meaning

Within this verse, it is being conveyed that God has nurtured and cultivated a certain group of individuals, allowing them to prosper and bear fruit. The imagery of planting, rooting, growing, and fruit-bearing emphasize the idea of God's care and provision for his people. The mention of God being near in their mouth suggests that these individuals may speak of God's presence and blessings in their lives. However, the line "far from their reins" indicates that despite their outward expressions of faith, there may be a disconnect or insincerity in their hearts. This verse serves as a reminder that God sees beyond our words and actions and knows the true state of our hearts. It encourages believers to seek authenticity and a genuine relationship with God, rather than just outward expressions of faith. Overall, this verse speaks to the importance of sincerity and true devotion in one's relationship with God.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of Jeremiah, the imagery of planting and growth is used to illustrate a spiritual truth. The metaphor of planting and rooting conveys the idea of God establishing his people in a certain place or situation. The growth and fruit-bearing described in the verse can be understood as the result of God's nurturing and care for his people. The mention of God being near in their mouths but far from their reins points to a potential hypocrisy or superficiality in the relationship between God and his people. It suggests that while they may speak of God and acknowledge him with their mouths, their hearts and innermost thoughts may be far from him. This verse serves as a reminder for believers to examine the sincerity of their relationship with God and to strive for true alignment between their words and actions.
