Book of Jeremiah - Chapter 10 - Verse 22

10:22
Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons.

Meaning

Throughout the Bible, prophecies play a significant role in understanding the will of God and the future events that will unfold. In this particular verse, the prophet Jeremiah warns the people of Judah about the impending destruction that will be brought upon them by a powerful force from the north. The "bruit" or the sound of tumult is a symbolic representation of the impending chaos and devastation that will come upon the land. The "north country" represents the direction from which this destruction will come, suggesting a foreign invader or enemy. The cities of Judah will be left desolate, devoid of life and prosperity, turning into a den of dragons, a place of darkness and despair. This verse serves as a cautionary message to the people of Judah, calling them to repentance and righteousness in order to avoid the impending wrath of God. It reminds us of the consequences of disobedience and the importance of heeding the warnings of prophets like Jeremiah.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse suggests that it is a warning of impending doom for the cities of Judah. The reference to the noise of the bruit and commotion from the north country may symbolize the approach of an invading army or destructive force. The mention of making the cities desolate and a den of dragons conveys the idea of complete devastation and chaos. In a theological context, the north is often associated with evil, destruction, and judgment. Dragons, in biblical imagery, represent evil forces or enemies of God. Therefore, this verse could be interpreted as a prophecy of God's judgment coming upon the people of Judah due to their disobedience and sin. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of turning away from God and the importance of staying faithful to His commandments.

American Standard Version
