Book of Isaiah - Chapter 6 - Verse 10

6:10
Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.

Meaning

This verse from the Bible, found in Isaiah 6:10, is a powerful statement from God about the consequences of spiritual deafness and blindness. The imagery used here is metaphorical, with "making the heart of the people fat, their ears heavy, and shutting their eyes" representing a hardening of hearts and a refusal to listen and see God's truth. By doing so, God is essentially preventing them from understanding His word, repenting, and being healed. The verse highlights the importance of spiritual receptiveness and humility in order to receive God's teachings and experience healing and transformation. It serves as a warning about the dangers of spiritual complacency and the need for openness and willingness to heed God's message. Ultimately, this verse reminds believers of the importance of being spiritually attuned and receptive to God's word in order to experience healing, transformation, and salvation.

Theological Overview

In this verse from Isaiah 6:10, God instructs Isaiah to deliver a message that would essentially harden the hearts of the people of Israel. The phrase "make the heart of this people fat" refers to God's judgment on the stubbornness and rebellion of the Israelites. By making their hearts fat, their ears heavy, and their eyes closed, God is essentially sealing their fate, preventing them from repenting and turning back to Him. This hardening of their hearts, ears, and eyes would prevent them from seeing, hearing, understanding, and ultimately converting and being healed. This passage highlights the consequences of continued disobedience and the importance of heeding God's warnings.

American Standard Version
