Book of Isaiah - Chapter 50 - Verse 1

50:1
Thus saith the LORD, Where is the bill of your mother's divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.

Meaning

Within this verse, the LORD is questioning his people about the reasons for the troubles they have faced. By asking where the bill of their mother's divorcement is or who He has sold them to as creditors, the LORD is highlighting that their sufferings are not due to His actions, but rather consequences of their own wrongdoings. The LORD is emphasizing that the people have sold themselves into trouble through their sinful actions. This verse serves as a reminder of personal responsibility and the consequences of straying from the path of righteousness. Thus, it calls for introspection and repentance on the part of the people to reconcile with the LORD and mend their ways. By understanding the context and meaning behind the words of the LORD, readers can gain a deeper understanding of the importance of following a virtuous and righteous path.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of Isaiah, the prophet is conveying God's frustration with the people of Israel for their disobedience and sinfulness. The metaphor of a bill of divorcement is used to illustrate the idea that God's relationship with His people has been strained due to their transgressions. By asking where the bill of divorcement is, God is essentially questioning why the people believe they have been abandoned when in reality, it is their own actions that have caused the separation. The reference to creditors and selling further emphasizes the consequences of their sins, highlighting that it is their own iniquities that have led to their downfall. Overall, this verse serves as a reminder of the importance of remaining faithful to God and the consequences of straying from His path.
