Book of Isaiah - Chapter 46 - Verse 6

46:6
They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, and hire a goldsmith; and he maketh it a god: they fall down, yea, they worship.

Meaning

This verse from the Bible illustrates the act of idolatry, where people worship material possessions such as gold and silver as if they were gods. The verse describes how individuals would take precious resources out of their bags, weigh them carefully, and hire a goldsmith to craft these materials into idols for worship. The act of worshiping these man-made objects demonstrates a lack of understanding and a misplacement of faith. The verse serves as a cautionary reminder about the dangers of placing value in material wealth over spiritual beliefs. It highlights the human tendency to idolize tangible items rather than focusing on the intangible aspects of life, such as faith, morals, and values. Ultimately, this verse encourages readers to reflect on what they prioritize in their lives and to consider the true meaning of worship and devotion.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the people are described as lavishing gold and silver to create idols for themselves. This act of worshiping material possessions reveals a deeper theological interpretation about the dangers of idolatry. The use of precious metals to fashion gods highlights the misplaced priorities and false beliefs of those who place their trust in material wealth rather than in the true God. The word study of "lavish" emphasizes the excessive and extravagant nature of their actions, indicating the extent to which they are willing to go to create and serve these false gods. The hiring of a goldsmith to fashion these idols underscores the deliberate choice to elevate man-made objects to the status of deity. The act of worshiping these idols reveals a profound spiritual emptiness and a rejection of the one true God who alone deserves our worship and devotion.

American Standard Version

Such as lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, they hire a goldsmith, and he maketh it a god; they fall down, yea, they worship.
