Book of Isaiah - Chapter 42 - Verse 17

42:17
They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, Ye are our gods.

Meaning

In this verse, the prophet Isaiah is condemning those who put their trust in idols and worship graven images. The message is clear that those who rely on objects made of wood, stone, or metal will ultimately be disappointed and ashamed. The use of the words "turned back" and "greatly ashamed" emphasize the idea that idol worship is a futile and misguided practice. By declaring their loyalty to these man-made gods, individuals are denying the true power and authority of the one true God. The verse serves as a warning against idolatry and a call to faith in the Almighty. It reminds believers to put their trust in God alone, rather than in lifeless objects that cannot offer salvation or true fulfillment.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the prophet Isaiah warns against idolatry and the worship of false gods. The term "graven images" refers to idols or images that were carved or sculpted by human hands and worshipped as deities. By placing their faith in idols, individuals are essentially denying the one true God and turning away from the source of true salvation. The use of "molten images" further highlights the emptiness and futility of worshipping objects that have been crafted by human hands. The prophet is calling for a return to the worship of the one God who is worthy of adoration and praise. This verse serves as a reminder to remain steadfast in our faith and to place our trust in the Almighty, rather than in created things.
