Book of Isaiah - Chapter 37 - Verse 14

37:14
And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.

Meaning

When Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers, he did not immediately respond or make decisions based on its contents. Instead, he chose to go up to the house of the Lord and spread the letter before Him. This action symbolizes Hezekiah's trust in the Lord and his commitment to seeking guidance through prayer and supplication. By spreading the letter before the Lord, Hezekiah is essentially placing his concerns and anxieties in God's hands, acknowledging that only He has the power to provide wisdom and direction in times of need. This act of surrender and faith serves as a powerful example for believers today, reminding them of the importance of seeking God's guidance in all circumstances and trusting in His divine wisdom and sovereignty.

Theological Overview

Hezekiah's actions in this verse demonstrate a deep sense of spiritual dependence and trust in the Lord. When he received a threatening letter, instead of relying on his own wisdom or strength, he immediately went up to the house of the LORD and spread it before the Lord. This act of spreading the letter before the Lord can be seen as a symbolic gesture of surrendering the problem to God and seeking His guidance and intervention. It reflects a humble acknowledgment of God's sovereignty and power over all circumstances. The word "spread" in this context can be interpreted as Hezekiah laying out the situation before the Lord in complete openness and transparency, not holding anything back. This action also shows Hezekiah's faith in God's ability to protect and deliver him from any adversity. Overall, this verse serves as a powerful reminder for believers to bring their concerns before the Lord in prayer and to trust in His providence and care.
