Book of Isaiah - Chapter 29 - Verse 10

29:10
For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Isaiah, the prophet is relaying a message from God to the people of Israel. The imagery of deep sleep and closed eyes is used to convey the idea that the religious leaders and rulers of the time have been spiritually blinded and are unable to see or understand the truth that God is trying to reveal to them through his prophets and seers. The phrase "the spirit of deep sleep" suggests a state of spiritual numbness or ignorance that has overtaken the people, preventing them from being able to recognize the prophetic messages being sent to them. God has chosen to close their eyes and cover the vision of the prophets and rulers as a punishment for their disobedience and lack of faith. This verse serves as a warning to the people to awaken from their spiritual slumber and turn back to God before it is too late.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of Isaiah, the speaker is conveying a message from the Lord to the people. The phrase "the spirit of deep sleep" is a metaphorical description of a spiritual condition in which the people are deaf and blind to God's messages. This deep sleep signifies a state of spiritual insensitivity and ignorance. The closing of their eyes symbolizes their refusal to see the truth that God is trying to reveal to them through prophets, rulers, and seers. The Lord's action of covering the prophets and rulers highlights the people's rejection of divine guidance and their unwillingness to listen to the messages of those who are meant to lead them spiritually. Through this verse, the people are being warned about the consequences of their spiritual blindness and the importance of being receptive to God's teachings through His chosen messengers.

American Standard Version
