Theological Overview

When examining Isaiah 28:17, it is crucial to dive into the theological interpretation of the imagery used within the verse. The laying of judgment "to the line" and righteousness "to the plummet" speaks to God's precise and just judgment upon the lies and deceit of the people. The line and plummet signify the exactness and fairness of God's judgments, leaving no room for error or partiality. The hail sweeping away the refuge of lies and the waters overflowing the hiding place further emphasize the inevitability of God's judgment upon those who continue in falsehood and deception. This verse serves as a warning to those who seek to deceive others, promising that their refuge of lies will be destroyed, and they will not be able to escape the flood of God's righteous judgment. It is a reminder of the importance of living in truth and righteousness, for God sees and will hold all accountable for their actions.
