Meaning

In this verse, the prophet Isaiah is addressing the people of Jerusalem, drawing their attention to the numerous breaches in the city walls of David. These breaches are symbolic of the city's vulnerability and weakness, leaving it open to attacks and destruction. The reference to the lower pool signifies a key water source for the city, essential for sustaining life and maintaining the city's defenses. By mentioning the gathering of waters from the lower pool, Isaiah may be highlighting the people's efforts to prepare for a siege or to strengthen the city's resilience in the face of imminent danger. Overall, this verse serves as a cautionary message to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, urging them to take action to protect their city and ensure its survival in the midst of adversity.

Theological Overview

The verse "Ye have seen also the breaches of the city of David, that they are many: and ye gathered together the waters of the lower pool" from the book of Isaiah can be interpreted theologically in various ways. One possible interpretation is that the breaches in the city of David symbolize the spiritual and moral decay of the people. This can be seen as a metaphor for the sins and transgressions that have weakened the spiritual foundation of the community. The gathering of waters in the lower pool could be seen as a call to repentance and restoration, where the people are urged to come together and seek forgiveness for their actions.

In terms of word studies, the phrase "breaches of the city of David" could refer to the physical gaps or holes in the walls of the city, which would have made it vulnerable to attack. This can also be understood metaphorically as weaknesses or vulnerabilities in the spiritual defenses of the people. The lower pool mentioned in the verse may have been a reservoir or cistern used to collect and store water for the city. The fact that the people gather together the waters of the lower pool could symbolize unity and cooperation in addressing the challenges and problems facing the community.
