Book of Isaiah - Chapter 17 - Verse 9

17:9
In that day shall his strong cities be as a forsaken bough, and an uppermost branch, which they left because of the children of Israel: and there shall be desolation.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Isaiah is a prophecy about the ultimate destruction of the strong cities of the enemy of Israel. The image of strong cities being compared to a forsaken bough and an uppermost branch highlights the severe devastation that will come upon them. Just as a branch that is left behind and abandoned, these cities will be deserted and left in ruins. The reference to the children of Israel suggests that their enemies will either be defeated or will flee, leading to the desolation of their once powerful cities. This can be seen as a message of hope and triumph for the Israelites, indicating that their enemies will be defeated and their strongholds will crumble. This verse serves as a reminder of the power and protection that God provides for His people, despite the challenges they may face.

Theological Overview

From a theological perspective, the verse "In that day shall his strong cities be as a forsaken bough, and an uppermost branch, which they left because of the children of Israel: and there shall be desolation." is a prophecy about the ultimate destruction of the enemies of Israel. The imagery of strong cities being abandoned like a forsaken bough and an uppermost branch highlights the vulnerability and frailty of human strength and power in the face of God's judgment. The mention of the children of Israel suggests that it is because of their righteousness and obedience to God that their enemies will suffer desolation. This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of turning away from God and the ultimate victory of His people. The word studies in this verse also reveal the underlying message of faithfulness and trust in God's ultimate plan, even in the midst of destruction and desolation.

American Standard Version

In that day shall their strong cities be as the forsaken places in the wood and on the mountain top, which were forsaken from before the children of Israel; and it shall be a desolation.
