Book of Isaiah - Chapter 17 - Verse 8

17:8
And he shall not look to the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall respect that which his fingers have made, either the groves, or the images.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Isaiah in the Bible emphasizes the importance of worshiping God alone and not idols or man-made objects. It conveys the idea that true worship should not be directed towards material things that human hands have created, such as altars or images. By focusing on these physical representations, people can lose sight of the spiritual connection with God that should be at the center of their worship. The verse also mentions groves, which were commonly associated with pagan rituals and practices in ancient times. Thus, the message is clear that believers should not venerate anything other than the divine Creator. This verse serves as a reminder to maintain a pure and sincere faith in God, free from the distractions and temptations of worshiping objects of human construction.

Theological Overview

Within the theological interpretation of this verse, there is a clear emphasis on the rejection of idolatry and the worship of man-made objects. The verse underscores the importance of worshipping God alone and not turning to altars or idols crafted by human hands. This rejection of idols is further emphasized by mentioning both the groves, which were often associated with pagan worship, and images, which could refer to carved or molten idols. By not looking to these altars or respecting these man-made objects, one is called to put their faith solely in the divine presence of God. This serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of true worship and the rejection of false gods, highlighting the need to remain faithful to God and avoid the temptation of bowing down to idols.

American Standard Version

And they shall not look to the altars, the work of their hands; neither shall they have respect to that which their fingers have made, either the Asherim, or the sun-images.
