Book of Isaiah - Chapter 10 - Verse 16

10:16
Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.

Meaning

Isaiah 10:16 speaks of the consequences that the Lord, the Lord of hosts, will bring upon the proud and wealthy individuals who have oppressed the poor and neglected their responsibilities. The verse symbolizes a reversal of fortunes, as those who were once prosperous and living in abundance will experience a sudden decline in their wealth and prosperity, represented by the imagery of "leanness" among the "fat ones." This serves as a warning against arrogance and selfishness, reminding individuals of the importance of using their blessings to help others and to uphold justice and righteousness. The imagery of a burning fire under the Lord's glory signifies divine judgement and purification, highlighting the ultimate power and authority of God. It serves as a reminder that no one is above accountability and that ultimately, justice will prevail under the sovereign rule of the Lord of hosts.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the prophet Isaiah delivers a message from the Lord proclaiming judgment on those who are rich and indulgent. The phrase "fat ones" can be symbolic of those who are living in excess and luxury, perhaps neglecting the needs of others or turning away from God. The Lord of hosts, the Almighty and powerful God, will send "leanness" among them, bringing about a time of scarcity and want. This can be seen as a form of divine discipline, as God seeks to humble those who have been prideful and selfish. The imagery of a burning fire under God's glory suggests a fierce and intense judgment that will consume all that is not in alignment with His will. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of living in obedience to God and not allowing wealth or material possessions to become a stumbling block on our spiritual journey. It is a call to turn away from selfishness and greed, and to seek righteousness and humility before the Lord.

American Standard Version
