Book of Isaiah - Chapter 1 - Verse 6

1:6
From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.

Meaning

This verse from the Book of Isaiah describes the physical and spiritual condition of the people of Israel at the time. The imagery used paints a picture of complete corruption and decay - from head to toe, there is no soundness in them. Wounds, bruises, and putrifying sores cover their bodies, symbolizing the sins and transgressions that have permeated throughout the entire nation. These wounds and sores have not been tended to; they have been left open, untreated, and untreated. The lack of healing ointment or bandages represents the absence of spiritual healing and restoration. The verse serves as a powerful message about the consequences of sin and the importance of seeking repentance and healing.

Theological Overview

This verse in Isaiah 1:6 paints a vivid picture of the physical condition of the people of Judah, but it also holds deeper theological implications. The imagery of wounds, bruises, and putrifying sores symbolizes the spiritual sickness and corruption of the nation. The lack of healing or treatment for these sores highlights the consequences of their disobedience and rebellion against God. In a theological interpretation, this verse can serve as a powerful reminder of the consequences of sin and the importance of seeking repentance and healing through God's mercy and grace. The mention of wounds that have not been closed, bruises that have not been bound up, and sores that have not been mollified with ointment, also serves as a metaphor for the unhealed brokenness and suffering that occurs when we turn away from God and His ways. Just as physical wounds left untreated can worsen and fester, so too can the wounds of our souls if we do not turn to God for healing and restoration. This verse calls us to reflect on our own spiritual condition and seek the healing and restoration that can only come from God.

American Standard Version

From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; [but] wounds, and bruises, and fresh stripes: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with oil.
