Book of Hebrews - Chapter 4 - Verse 2

4:2
For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

Meaning

This verse from Hebrews 4:2 serves as a reminder of the importance of having faith in the gospel. It highlights the fact that simply hearing the word of God is not enough; it must be combined with faith in order to be truly beneficial. The author is drawing a comparison between the Israelites who heard the gospel in the past but did not believe, and the readers of the letter who are being encouraged to have faith in the message they are hearing. The verse emphasizes that without faith, the gospel will not have a positive impact on one's life. Therefore, it serves as a call to action for believers to not only listen to the word of God but to also put their trust in it and allow it to transform their hearts and minds. By mixing the preached word with faith, one can experience the fullness of the gospel and its power to bring about salvation and change lives.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of Hebrews 4:2 highlights the importance of faith when receiving the message of the gospel. The author of Hebrews emphasizes that even though the gospel was proclaimed to both the Israelites in the wilderness and the early Christian believers, it did not benefit the former because they lacked faith. This verse underscores the idea that hearing the gospel message is not enough; it must be accompanied by faith in order to be effective. The word "preached" in this passage refers to the proclamation of the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ. The lack of faith mentioned here suggests that faith is a crucial element in receiving and understanding the gospel. This interpretation underscores the significance of faith as the key that unlocks the transformative power of the gospel in the lives of believers.

American Standard Version

For indeed we have had good tidings preached unto us, even as also they: but the word of hearing did not profit them, because it was not united by faith with them that heard.
