Book of Hebrews - Chapter 3 - Verse 3

3:3
For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.

Meaning

In this verse from the Book of Hebrews, the author compares Jesus to Moses, stating that Jesus is worthy of more glory because he is the builder of the house, while Moses was merely a servant in God's house. The house mentioned here symbolizes God's people, the church, of which Jesus is the founder and cornerstone. Jesus is given greater honor than Moses because he is God in human form and the ultimate source of salvation for all who believe in him.

By contrasting the roles of Jesus and Moses, the verse highlights the superiority of Jesus as the ultimate authority and leader of the faith. It is a reminder to believers of the importance of focusing on Christ and his teachings, above all other human leaders or figures. This verse serves as a theological reflection on the significance of Jesus' ministry and his role in the establishment of the Christian church. It encourages readers to place their trust in Jesus as the one who brings true glory and honor to God's house.

Theological Overview

Interpreting the verse "For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house," reveals a theological insight into the superiority of Christ over Moses. In this comparison, Jesus is likened to the builder of a house while Moses is likened to the house itself. The argument is made that the builder, in this case, Jesus, deserves more honor and glory than the house, which represents Moses. This understanding highlights the importance of recognizing Jesus' role as the creator and sustainer of all things, emphasizing his supreme authority and divinity. By acknowledging Jesus as the one who builds and establishes all things, believers are called to give him the reverence and adoration that rightfully belongs to him as the ultimate source of glory and honor.

American Standard Version

For he hath been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by so much as he that built the house hath more honor than the house.
