Book of Genesis - Chapter 44 - Verse 23

44:23
And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.

Meaning

In this verse, Joseph is speaking to his brothers, who have come to Egypt to buy grain during a famine. Joseph, who is now the ruler of Egypt, recognizes his brothers but they do not recognize him. Joseph tells them that unless they bring their youngest brother Benjamin back with them, they will not be able to see his face again. This is a test that Joseph is putting his brothers through to see if they have truly changed and are willing to protect and care for their younger brother. Joseph wants to make sure that they are no longer envious, deceitful, and willing to harm their own brother. By making it a condition that they bring Benjamin with them, Joseph is testing their character and seeing if they have truly repented for their past actions. This verse serves as a turning point in the story, as it sets the stage for the brothers' eventual reconciliation and Joseph revealing his identity to them.
