Book of Genesis - Chapter 44 - Verse 16

44:16
And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord's servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

Meaning

After Joseph's cup was found in Benjamin's sack, Judah speaks up on behalf of his brothers, acknowledging their guilt and the consequences of their actions. Judah's words reflect a sense of remorse and acceptance of the situation they find themselves in. He expresses a willingness to take responsibility for their actions and offers themselves as servants to Joseph. In this verse, Judah demonstrates humility and a recognition of God's judgment upon them for their past sins. His words show a shift from their initial deceit and betrayal towards a place of honesty and submission. This moment marks a turning point in the story of Joseph and his brothers, as they begin to face the consequences of their past actions and strive towards reconciliation and redemption.

Theological Overview

In this verse from Genesis 44:16, Judah is speaking to the Egyptian official who has accused them of stealing his silver cup. Judah's response reveals a theological interpretation of the situation at hand. He acknowledges that they have been caught red-handed, and he attributes this to God who has found out the iniquity of the servants. By using the term "iniquity," Judah acknowledges their wrongdoing and guilt before God. This points to a theological understanding of divine justice and accountability. Additionally, Judah expresses a sense of humility and submission to the Egyptian official, referring to him as "my lord" and recognizing that they are all his servants. This acknowledgment of God's sovereignty and justice, along with humility and submission, is a common theme found throughout the Bible when people come face to face with their sins and the consequences of their actions.

American Standard Version

And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord's bondmen, both we, and he also in whose hand the cup is found.
