40:22
But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.

Meaning

In this verse, we see the fulfillment of Joseph's interpretation of the dreams of the chief cupbearer and the chief baker. Joseph correctly predicted that the chief cupbearer would be restored to his position serving Pharaoh, while at the same time revealing that the chief baker would be hanged. This event not only showcases Joseph's gift of dream interpretation, but also highlights the divine guidance at work in his life. Through these acts, we see the unfolding of God's plan for Joseph to eventually rise to power and influence in Egypt. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of trusting in God's timing and sovereignty, even in the midst of difficult circumstances. It also shows how God can use individuals like Joseph to bring about his purposes in the world.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the words 'chief baker' hold significant theological implications. The role of the chief baker in ancient Egypt was crucial as they were responsible for providing food for Pharaoh and his household. The fact that the chief baker was hanged highlights the severity of his offense and the consequences of his actions. From a theological perspective, this event serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity and obedience to God's commands. The word 'interpreted' also lends itself to a deeper theological meaning. Joseph's gift of interpretation, given to him by God, not only saved his own life but also foretold the fate of the chief baker. This shows how God's plans are always at work, even in the midst of seemingly dire circumstances.
