Book of Genesis - Chapter 39 - Verse 15

39:15
And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.

Meaning

When Joseph's master's wife falsely accused him of making advances towards her, Joseph found himself in a difficult situation. Despite his innocence, the circumstances seemed stacked against him. However, Joseph did not remain silent in the face of these false accusations. He lifted up his voice and cried out, maintaining his integrity and refusing to succumb to the unjust situation. When his master heard Joseph's outcry, he realized the truth of the matter and saw through his wife's deceit. In a haste to escape from the situation and uphold his own reputation, Joseph's master fled, leaving behind his garment with Joseph as evidence of the truth. This verse illustrates the power of honesty and integrity in the face of adversity, showing that standing up for what is right can eventually lead to vindication.

Theological Overview

In this verse, Joseph recounts how he was falsely accused by Potiphar's wife of making advances towards her. Here, the phrase "lifted up my voice and cried" can be interpreted theologically as a symbol of Joseph calling out to God for help in the face of temptation and injustice. The act of Joseph leaving his garment behind could be seen as him fleeing from sin, leaving behind any earthly attachments that could lead him astray. This can be applied to our own lives as a reminder to flee from temptation and cling to God in times of trouble. When looking at the word "garment," it can also be noted that in biblical times, garments were often used as symbols of status and identity. Therefore, Joseph leaving his garment behind could signify him leaving behind his worldly identity and choosing to trust in God alone. Overall, this verse provides a powerful lesson on the importance of remaining faithful to God in the face of adversity and the rewards that come from trusting in Him.
