Book of Genesis - Chapter 35 - Verse 14

35:14
And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon.

Meaning

After Jacob had a conversation with God in a dream where God promised to be with him and bless him, Jacob set up a pillar of stone in the place where he had spoken with God. This pillar served as a physical reminder of the encounter and the promises made. By pouring a drink offering and oil on the pillar, Jacob was demonstrating his gratitude and reverence for God's presence and the words spoken to him. The act of pouring out the drink offering and oil was a common practice in ancient rituals, symbolizing a sacrifice or offering to God. In this context, it represented Jacob's acknowledgment of God's sovereignty and his desire to honor Him. This verse highlights the importance of remembering and commemorating divine encounters, as well as the significance of expressing gratitude and reverence towards God.

Theological Overview

Jacob's act of setting up a pillar in the place where he had spoken with God carries significant theological interpretations. The pillar symbolizes a memorial to commemorate the divine encounter and the establishment of a covenant with God. The use of a stone pillar signifies permanence and solidity, reflecting the enduring nature of God's promises to His people. Furthermore, the pouring of a drink offering and oil on the pillar was a common practice in ancient Near Eastern cultures to signify consecration and dedication to God. The drink offering represented a pouring out of oneself in worship and surrender to God, while the oil symbolized an anointing or consecration for a special purpose. Therefore, Jacob's actions in setting up the pillar, pouring the drink offering, and oil demonstrate his acknowledgment of God's presence and his commitment to honoring and serving Him.

American Standard Version
