Book of Genesis - Chapter 33 - Verse 18

33:18
And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padanaram; and pitched his tent before the city.

Meaning

When Jacob arrived at Shalem, a city in Shechem, as he was returning from Padanaram to Canaan, it marked a significant moment in his journey. Shalem, also known as Shechem, was a prominent city in the land of Canaan, located in the heart of the region where Jacob's ancestors had lived. By pitching his tent before the city, Jacob was symbolically signaling his connection to the land promised to his forefathers by God. This act also demonstrated Jacob's intention to settle and establish roots in Canaan, fulfilling the promise made to him by God to give this land to his descendants. Furthermore, Jacob's arrival in Shechem set the stage for important events to come, including interactions with the local inhabitants and the eventual establishment of his family in this new territory. Thus, this verse serves as a pivotal moment in Jacob's journey and his ultimate fulfillment of God's plan for his life.

Theological Overview

In this verse, we see Jacob arriving at the city of Shechem in the land of Canaan after leaving Padanaram. The city of Shechem holds significance in biblical history as it is where Jacob's sons Levi and Simeon avenged their sister Dinah's honor by tricking the men of Shechem into circumcising themselves and then attacking them while they were recovering. The word "Shalem" can also be interpreted as "peace", which adds a layer of meaning to Jacob pitching his tent before the city. It could signify Jacob's desire for peace and restoration after the tumultuous events that led him there. Additionally, the location of Shechem in the land of Canaan is significant as Canaan was the land promised to Abraham and his descendants by God. This journey of Jacob symbolizes the fulfillment of God's promise to his forefathers and sets the stage for the events that will unfold in his life and the lives of his descendants.

American Standard Version
