Book of Genesis - Chapter 20 - Verse 16

20:16
And unto Sarah he said, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Genesis, Sarah is being reproved by Abraham for her behavior towards her husband's relationship with Abimelech. Abraham has just told Abimelech that Sarah is his sister, fearing for his life in a foreign land. Abimelech then gives gifts to Abraham, including a thousand pieces of silver, to show his respect and compensate for any wrongdoing. In this context, Abraham tells Sarah that the gift of silver given to him by Abimelech serves as a covering of the eyes, a way to protect her dignity and honor in the eyes of others. It is a way for Abraham to remind Sarah that she should trust in him to protect and provide for her. This verse showcases the importance of trust and honesty in a marital relationship, as well as the need for understanding and forgiveness. It serves as a lesson for all believers to value honesty and respect in their relationships.

Theological Overview

In the theological interpretation of this verse where Abraham refers to Sarah as his sister, scholars often emphasize the cultural context of the time. In ancient times, it was not uncommon for a man to refer to his wife as his sister to protect her from unwanted advances or harm, as was the case with Abraham and Sarah. The word 'covering of the eyes' is also analyzed in depth, with some interpreting it as a gesture of protection or a shield from shame or disgrace. Additionally, the mention of a thousand pieces of silver is seen as a significant amount, representing a form of compensation or restitution to Sarah for being put in a vulnerable position. Overall, this verse highlights the complexities of relationships, cultural norms, and the importance of communication and trust in marriages, all of which are themes that resonate with readers today.
