Book of Galatians - Chapter 5 - Verse 3

5:3
For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.

Meaning

In this verse, the Apostle Paul is addressing the issue of circumcision in the context of the Mosaic Law. He emphasizes that by choosing to be circumcised, one becomes a debtor to do the whole law. This means that by undergoing this physical act, a person essentially commits themselves to keeping all the commandments and regulations outlined in the Old Testament Law. Paul is cautioning believers against relying solely on outward rituals or following specific laws as a means of salvation, as the requirement of keeping the entire law is impossible for human beings to fulfill completely. Instead, he emphasizes the importance of faith in Jesus Christ and the grace of God as the basis for salvation, rather than legalistic observance of individual aspects of the Mosaic Law. This verse serves as a reminder that true righteousness comes through faith and not through mere adherence to religious practices.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the Apostle Paul is addressing the issue of legalism within the early Christian community. The act of circumcision was a significant symbol under the Old Covenant, signifying a person's commitment to keeping the entire Mosaic Law. However, Paul is making it clear that for the Christian who has been circumcised solely out of a sense of religious obligation, they are now bound to fulfill the entirety of the Law. This emphasizes the futility of trying to earn salvation through works alone. Paul's theological interpretation here is pointing to the fact that true salvation is not achieved through external rituals or adherence to the Law, but through faith in Christ's sacrificial death and resurrection. The word "debtor" in this context signifies a sense of obligation and indebtedness to fulfill the Law, which Paul is highlighting as an impossible task for any human being to accomplish perfectly. Therefore, this verse serves as a reminder of the grace and mercy found in Christ, who fulfilled the Law on behalf of believers, freeing them from the burden of legalistic obligations.

American Standard Version
