Book of Galatians - Chapter 3 - Verse 27

3:27
For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Meaning

When we are baptized into Christ, we are symbolically putting on Christ like a garment. This signifies a deep spiritual union with Him, where we take on His character, His nature, and His righteousness. By being baptized into Christ, we are identifying ourselves with His death, burial, and resurrection, and publicly declaring our faith in Him as our savior. This act of baptism represents a new beginning, a transformation of our old self into a new creation in Christ. It is a symbolic washing away of our sins and a commitment to walk in obedience to Him. Through baptism, we are united with Christ in His death and resurrection, and are now members of His body, the church. As we "put on Christ" through baptism, we are called to live a life that reflects His love, grace, and truth to the world around us.

Theological Overview

According to the theological interpretation of Galatians 3:27, being baptized into Christ symbolizes a spiritual union and identification with Him. This act of baptism signifies a believer's incorporation into the body of Christ and their participation in His death and resurrection. The phrase "put on Christ" carries the connotation of being clothed with His righteousness, holiness, and character. It speaks to the transformation that takes place in the life of a believer upon their acceptance of Christ as their Savior. Through baptism, one is outwardly expressing their inward commitment to follow Jesus and to be conformed to His image.

In terms of word studies, the phrase "put on" in the original Greek text is "endyƍ" which means to sink into clothing, to clothe one's self with, or to assume a certain character. This suggests a deliberate and intentional action on the part of the believer to take on the likeness of Christ in their thoughts, attitudes, and actions. By putting on Christ, believers are called to reflect His love, compassion, and obedience in their daily lives.

American Standard Version
