Book of Galatians - Chapter 3 - Verse 12

3:12
And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.

Meaning

In this verse, the apostle Paul is addressing the relationship between the law and faith. He is emphasizing that the law and faith operate in different ways when it comes to salvation. The law is based on works and following a set of rules and regulations, while faith is about trusting in God's grace and mercy for salvation. Paul is reminding believers that trying to earn salvation through works and adherence to the law will ultimately fall short, as no one can perfectly keep the law. Instead, Paul is highlighting the importance of living out the principles of the law in faith. This means that those who have faith in God will naturally want to obey His commandments out of love and gratitude, rather than a sense of obligation for salvation. Therefore, the verse serves as a reminder that true life and fulfillment come from living out the principles of the law in faith, rather than trying to earn salvation through works alone.

Theological Overview

When analyzing the theological interpretation of Galatians 3:12, it is essential to understand the context in which the verse is situated. The verse comes in the midst of a discussion about the relationship between the law and faith. In this particular verse, the apostle Paul is making a clear distinction between the requirements of the law and the principle of faith. He emphasizes that the law does not operate on the basis of faith, but rather on the principle of obedience. Paul goes on to quote from Leviticus 18:5, where it states that the individual who keeps the commandments shall live by them. This underscores the legalistic nature of the law in contrast to the grace-based nature of faith. Paul's message is that salvation cannot be attained through following the law, but rather through faith in Christ. Thus, the verse serves as a key point in Paul's argument against relying on works for salvation, highlighting the importance of faith as the means of receiving God's grace.
