Book of Galatians - Chapter 2 - Verse 13

2:13
And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Galatians, the apostle Paul recounts an incident in which Barnabas, along with other Jews, succumbed to peer pressure and hypocrisy. The term "dissemble" here refers to the act of concealing one's true motives or beliefs in order to deceive others. The Jews mentioned in this verse were hypocritically following the practices of the Jewish law to gain favor with others, instead of adhering to their true faith. Barnabas, who was initially a trusted companion of Paul, was also swayed by this behavior, leading to his participation in the deception. This verse serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of falling into hypocrisy and the importance of remaining true to one's beliefs, even in the face of social pressure. It reminds readers to always act with sincerity and integrity, rather than giving in to the temptation of pretending to be something they are not.
