1:10
For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

Meaning

The verse you are referring to highlights the importance of prioritizing God over the opinions and approval of man. The apostle Paul is expressing his commitment to serving Christ faithfully, regardless of whether it pleases or persuades others. By asking whether he should be focused on pleasing men or God, Paul is reminding believers to stay true to their faith and not be swayed by the expectations or preferences of those around them. This verse serves as a powerful reminder for Christians to reevaluate their motivations and ensure that their actions are aligned with God's will, rather than seeking the approval or acceptance of others. It encourages believers to live according to their faith in Christ, even if it means facing criticism or disapproval from society.

Theological Overview

In this verse from Galatians 1:10, Paul raises an important theological question about the source of his authority as an apostle. He asks whether he is trying to persuade men or God. This question highlights a key aspect of Christian ministry - the importance of seeking to please God above all else. Paul goes on to assert that if he were to seek the approval of men, he would not be a faithful servant of Christ. This passage emphasizes the need for Christians to prioritize pleasing God rather than seeking the approval of others. Through this verse, believers are reminded that their ultimate allegiance is to God, and that their actions and decisions should reflect this commitment. The phrase "the servant of Christ" underscores the idea that Christians are called to serve Christ above all else, even if it means going against the expectations or desires of others. This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of living a life that is pleasing to God, rather than seeking the approval of men.

American Standard Version
