Book of Ezekiel - Chapter 7 - Verse 20

7:20
As for the beauty of his ornament, he set it in majesty: but they made the images of their abominations and of their detestable things therein: therefore have I set it far from them.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Ezekiel talks about the contrast between God's beauty and majesty, and the idols and detestable things that the people chose to worship instead. God had adorned His sanctuary with beauty and majesty, but the people defiled it by creating images of their abominations and detestable things. As a result, God decided to set His beauty and ornament far away from them as a form of punishment for their idolatry. This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of turning away from God and worshiping false idols. It highlights the importance of honoring and worshiping God with reverence and respect, rather than investing in material things or false gods. By setting His beauty far from those who defiled His sanctuary, God teaches a lesson about the importance of true worship and the consequences of straying away from Him.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse can be found in the contrast between the beauty and majesty of God's ornament, and the abominable and detestable images that were made by the people. The verse highlights the contrast between the purity and holiness of God and the corruption and wickedness of humanity. The imagery of beauty and majesty associated with God's ornament underscores His splendor and glory, while the images of abominations and detestable things made by the people emphasize their sinful nature and rebellion against God. The setting of God's ornament far from them can be seen as a symbolic representation of the distance that sin creates between humanity and God. The verse serves as a warning against idolatry and the worship of false gods, emphasizing the importance of honoring and glorifying the one true God.
